For over 20 years, Tri County Community Action has strategically invested, located, and created stability in the National Historic Mount Pleasant District, South Allison Hill neighborhood of Harrisburg, PA. We are reinvigorating a diverse community with homegrown opportunities to innovate Harrisburg, the Capital of Pennsylvania, as the prosperous and family friendly place it is.
Realizing that as a community, we have a powerful partnership has enabled us to lift up this neighborhood by offering a broad range of human services, empowering residents to create change, making physical improvements to buildings and attracting investment into the neighborhood.
The South Allison Hill neighborhood is the most diverse and one of the lowest income communities in Harrisburg. While there are signs of hope and building momentum, difficult economic and social ills require integrated and holistic methods. Our belief is that by using our four part strategy this neighborhood will become a community that fosters hope and opportunity, celebrates its diversity, and is an inviting and thriving community in which people want to live, work and raise children.
Community-Based Solutions: Empower residents and provide technical assistance so that they can create their own envisioned changes;
Healthy Place to Raise Children: Provide high quality programming for youth and create a safe environment for families;
Fostering Economic Independence: Assist residents to create economic independence through educational and employment services;
Economic Revitalization: Invest in the physical environment; attract businesses and organizations that benefit the neighborhood.
Our strategy has brought major wins for the community including five major policy changes due to advocacy efforts of residents, major beautification efforts including the creation of a community hub out of three formerly vacant lots, the pre-development of a former brownfield site into a state-of-the-art health center, and placing 374 residents into jobs.
To build upon its assets and the positive momentum that is already occurring, residents and stakeholders have come together to proudly envision South Allison Hill becoming a community that fosters hope and opportunity, celebrates our diversity, and is an inviting and thriving community in which people want to live, work and raise children.
